Shankman will also choreograph a group number for the July 12 results show.
Created by "American Idol" executive producers Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe (the latter also appears as a judge), the show follows the format of its singing competition predecessor, as dancers from across the country audition, move on to a round where their skills are tested in a variety of styles (from hip-hop to ballroom and many more) with the audience calling in to vote for their favorites.
"So You Think You Can Dance" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays nights on FOX. For more information, visit fox.com/dance.
Shankman directs and choreographs (and appears in a cameo with Hairspray creators Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman) the "Hairspray" film, which stars John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Christopher Walken as Wilbur Turnblad, Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle, Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton, Zac Efron as Link Larkin, Brittany Snow as Amber von Tussel, Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma von Tussel, James Marsden as Corny Collins, Elijah Kelly as Seaweed, Allison Janney as Prudy Pingleton and Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad.
The film is based on the still-running musical Hairspray, which itself was based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. The movie musical was adapted by Leslie Dixon from the Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan book and features the score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman with additional songs created for the film. The film hits theatres nationwide July 20. Visit the official movie website at hairspraymovie.com.
