News Hairspray Film to Make Northwest Debut at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre — Where Musical First Played Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre — where the Broadway musical Hairspray made its stage debut in 2002 — will host the Northwest premiere of the film version of the hit musical July 16.

Scheduled to premiere at the Washington state venue at 7 PM, the event will also serve as a benefit for The 5th Avenue Theatre, Enterprise Community Partners and Cascade Land Conservancy.

The evening will feature the advance screening of the film, a big hair contest, a 1960s dance lesson, all-you-can-eat popcorn and "Hairspray" door prizes.

Adam Shankman directs and choreographs the "Hairspray" film, which stars John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Christopher Walken as Wilbur Turnblad, Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle, Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton, Zac Efron as Link Larkin, Brittany Snow as Amber von Tussel, Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma von Tussel, James Marsden as Corny Collins, Elijah Kelly as Seaweed, Allison Janney as Prudy Pingleton and Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad.

The film is based on the still-running musical Hairspray, which itself was based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. The movie musical was adapted by Leslie Dixon from the Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan book and features the score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman with additional songs created for the film. The film hits theatres nationwide July 20.
