Pop singer Ariana Grande, whose albums include Yours Truly, My Everything and the recent hit release Dangerous Woman, has been tapped to play Penny Pingleton in NBC’s live broadcast of the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray.
While she’s well-known to pop fans and Scream Queens viewers, Grande made her Broadway debut in the 2008 Jason Robert Brown musical 13.
She joins a cast that includes Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, who will recreate his iconic Tony Award-winning Broadway role as Edna Turnblad, as well as Kristin Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle, Martin Short as Wilbur Turnblad, Derek Hough as TV host Corny Collins, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Maybelle and newcomer Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad.
Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who have produced all three of NBC’s previous live musicals, have opted to shoot out of Los Angeles with Hairspray Live! The previous live broadcasts were shot in the New York area.
Hairspray Live! will air December 7 at 8 PM. Read more about Hairspray Live! here.
