The New Line Records release (which hit stores July 10, prior to the film's nationwide release July 20) places just behind chart newcomer "NOW 25," as well as "Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus" and "T.I. Vs T.I.P." Nielsen SoundScan reports the "Hairspray" album moved 36,745 total units in its debut last week and nearly doubled that with 71,625 this week.
On Billboard's Top Soundtracks chart, the soundtrack remains at No. 2. It places at No. 2 (a jump from No. 6 last week) on the Top Digital Albums. Over on the Top Cast Albums chart, the original Broadway cast recording of the musical continues its climb reaching No. 4 this week.
The "Hairspray" CD features 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers — "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." The new songs were also penned by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who received the Tony Award for their Hairspray score.
The album also features the song "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" (heard over the end credits, but cut from the film's plot) as sung by all three incarnations of Tracy Turnblad — original film star Rikki Lake, original Broadway star Marissa Jaret Winokur and film star Nikki Blonsky. The soundtrack is produced by Shaiman and features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney and Peter Mokran.

Adam Shankman directs and choreographs the "Hairspray" film, which stars John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Christopher Walken as Wilbur Turnblad, Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle, Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton, Zac Efron as Link Larkin, Brittany Snow as Amber von Tussel, Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma von Tussel, James Marsden as Corny Collins, Elijah Kelly as Seaweed, Allison Janney as Prudy Pingleton and Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad.
The film is based on the still-running musical Hairspray, which itself was based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name. The movie musical was adapted by Leslie Dixon from the Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan book and features the score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman with additional songs created for the film.
