Liz Smith reports that the Tony Award-winning Hairspray star has been cast in the third TV production of Once Upon a Mattress. Winokur will play Princess Winnifred opposite the original Princess, Carol Burnett. Burnett, who starred in Mattress on Broadway in 1959 and on television in 1964 (in black and white) and in 1972 (in color), will play the conniving Queen Aggravain. CBS, which presented the award-winning "Carol Burnett Show," will produce the television special, although production and air dates have yet to be announced. Once Upon a Mattress, which is essentially the fable of "The Princess and the Pea" set to music, marked Burnett's Broadway debut, and her role as the comical Winnifred became one of Burnett's signature prts. Featuring a score by Mary Rodgers (music) and Marshall Barer (lyrics) and a book by Barer, Jay Thompson and Dean Fuller, the original Broadway company also included Jack Gilford, Joe Bova and Jane White. The 1996 Broadway revival featured "Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker in the role created by Burnett with co-stars David Aaron Baker, Jane Krakowski and Mary Lou Rosato.
Marissa Jaret Winokur won the 2003 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray. She also appeared on Broadway in the hit revival of Grease! as well as the L.A. Reprise production of Hair. Winokur portrayed Janine in the Oscar winning film “American Beauty" and has also been seen in “Teaching Mrs. Tingle,” “Never Been Kissed,” “Scary Movie,” “Dharma & Greg,” “Moesha,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Boston Public,” “The Ellen Show,” “Felicity,” “Nikki,” “Steve Harvey,” “Get Real” and “Curb: Your Enthusiasm.” "Beautiful Girl" airs on the ABC Family Channel Oct. 19.
