The three-year-old awards honor performances in New York City nightclubs in the fields of cabaret, comedy, and jazz. The winners are chosen by critics and other experts.
Jones, a veteran who has played with Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Parker, was named outstanding jazz soloist; the other finalists were pianist Bill Charlap and tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander.
The Harry Allen and Joe Cohn Quartet, featuring the saxophonist and guitarist, won in the jazz combo category, besting the Lee Konitz Nonet and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra.
Paula West was chosen as top female jazz vocalist over Annie Ross and Sheila Jordan; Cole beat out John Pizzarelli and Allan Harris in the male jazz vocalist category.
The February 6 awards show will feature performances by cabaret singer Eartha Kitt, the winner of the Nightlight Legend Award and other winners (organizers have not yet confirmed who will be in attendance). According to a press release, "there are no acceptance speeches! Celebrity presenters introduce the winners who then perform to show why there were chosen."
