News Happy 35th! Classic Stage Company Throws Starry Benefit Bash April 28 Off-Broadway's Classic Stage Company celebrates its 35th anniversary with a gala celebration 7 PM April 28 at The Metropolitan Pavilion.

The reception will be followed by dinner and a special presentation featuring a roster of star talent set to include Bill Irwin, John Turturro, Nick Wyman, Roger Rees, Michael Torke and other Classic Stage artists.

Proceeds from the special evening will benefit the productions and programs of Classic Stage Company, the not-for-profit Equity troupe devoted to reimagining classics texts (although the mandate has come to include a broad range of works).

Metropolitan Pavilion is at 110 W. 19th Street (between Sixth and Seventh Avenues). Tickets are $350 each ($228 of each ticket is tax-deductible), with other ranges of donor tables available.

To order tickets or for more information, call Anne Tanaka, at CSC at (212) 677-4210 ext. 14.

* Earlier in 2003, artistic director Barry Edelstein announced he would leave the company at the end of the current season, at a time when the company is financially in the black. A search for a new leader continues. The next season will be announced by summer.

Kathleen Chalfant will star in Marguerite Dumas' Savannah Bay at CSC starting May 29. The show, which opens June 20, will be the last supervised by outgoing artistic director Edelstein.

Chalfant won nearly every award available for an Off-Broadway actress for 1998's Wit. In Savannah Bay, she will play an aging mother interrogated by her daughter, who seeks to truly know her parent. While exploring issues of identity and growing old, the language-intensive Dumas exposes the secrets of the older woman's life, all to the daughter's surprise and shock. Savannah Bay will run through June 29.

Marin Ireland plays the daughter. Ireland and Chalfant were recently paired at New York Theatre Workshop in Caryl Churchill's Far Away.

Les Waters (Big Love, Life During Wartime) directs. The design team includes Myung Hee Cho (sets), Ilona Somogyi (costumes), Robert Wierzel (lights) and Darron L. West (sound).

Single tickets are $35-$50. Call (212) 677-4210. Classic Stage Company is located at 136 East 13th St. and on the web at http://www.classicstage.com.
