News Harlem, When It Sizzles: Funkentine Musical Gets NYC Readings March 29-30 The Funkentine Rapture, the Harlem-set musical billed as "a wild '70s soulful celebration of cool cats, catfish, romance and fat funky fried music," will be heard in public readings March 29-30 in Manhattan as part of The Amas Musical Theatre's Six O'Clock Musical Theatre Lab.

The show has a book by Lee Summers and Ben Blake (From My Hometown), music and lyrics by Lee Summers (recent recipient of The Gilman Gonzales-Falla Foundation Award). Summers also serves as musical director.

Set in Harlem, Funkentine "follows the ambitions of one young singer, the owners of a diner specializing in Cat Fish Surprise, and the nefarious plot by Colonel Sanders' betrayed business partner to steal their recipe and take it commercial."

The cast includes Clifton Oliver, Julia Lema and Katy Grenfell.

The Amas Six O'Clock Musical Theatre Lab is a development series for writers, lyricists and composers to mount staged readings of their new musicals.

Donna Trinkoff is producing director of Amas. The Funkentine performances are 6 PM March 29 and 4 PM March 30 at The John Houseman Studio Theatre, 450 W. 42nd Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues. Admission is free. For reservations, call (212) 563-2565.
