The show has a book by Lee Summers and Ben Blake (From My Hometown), music and lyrics by Lee Summers (recent recipient of The Gilman Gonzales-Falla Foundation Award). Summers also serves as musical director.
Set in Harlem, Funkentine "follows the ambitions of one young singer, the owners of a diner specializing in Cat Fish Surprise, and the nefarious plot by Colonel Sanders' betrayed business partner to steal their recipe and take it commercial."
The cast includes Clifton Oliver, Julia Lema and Katy Grenfell.
The Amas Six O'Clock Musical Theatre Lab is a development series for writers, lyricists and composers to mount staged readings of their new musicals.
