She’s lining up as Elizabeth I against another theatrical heavyweight, Janet McTeer, as Mary in Schiller’s Mary Stuart, beginning previews July 14.
The Donmar Warehouse production is directed by Phyllida Lloyd, whose previous Donmar shows have included Boston Marriage and Threepenny Opera, and whose work in the West End and beyond includes the immensely successful Mamma Mia.
The play, whose last major London revival was at the National Theatre (where it starred Anna Massey and Isabelle Huppert), has been given a new version by Peter Oswald. It follows hot on the heels of the hit staging of Schiller’s Don Carlos (directed by the Donmar’s artistic director Michael Grandage), which transferred from Sheffield to London’s Gielgud Theatre.
The cast includes David Burke as Talbot, James Fleet as Amyss Paulet, Barbara Jefford as Hannah Kennedy and Rory Kinnear as Mortimer. The show officially opens July 20, and will run through September 3.
