Philip Chaffin, PS Classics co-founder and album co-producer, told Playbill.com, "Months and months ago, when we first heard that Fun Home was making its way to Broadway, our intention was to record only the newly-written material. That would be standard. But then we saw the Broadway production in previews, and realized at once that it had its own energy and immediacy, and we knew that we had to revisit the original disc and adapt it – to match not just the content, but the feel, of the Broadway production. Working closely with Jeanine and Lisa, we ended up newly recording a lot, including material we'd chosen not to include originally that now seemed crucial. We wound up, to our surprise, with a recording where over half the tracks are new, and 'Changing My Major' is a great example of how the album has changed, because Emily absolutely makes the song her own." Many members of the original Public Theater cast return for the uptown transfer, including 2015 Tony nominees Beth Malone, Judy Kuhn, Sydney Lucas and Michael Cerveris.

Fun Home has music by Tony Award nominee Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, Or Change; Shrek) and book and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Lisa Kron (Well). The musical received 12 Tony Award nominations, including Best Score, Best Book and Best Musical.

This isn't the first time a PS Classics cast album was freshened up for Broadway. The label also returned to the recording studio to update the original Off-Broadway cast album of Grey Gardens when the acclaimed musical transferred to Broadway with additional material and new cast members.

Fun Home is described as "a fresh, daring new musical based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Alison Bechdel. When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father's hidden desires."

Fun Home is produced by Fox Theatricals (Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson) and Barbara Whitman, along with Carole Shorenstein Hays, Tom Casserly, Paula Marie Black, Latitude Link, Terry Schnuck/Jack Lane, The Forstalls, Nathan Vernon, Mint Theatricals, Elizabeth Armstrong, JAM Theatricals, and Delman Whitney.
