Producers of the forthcoming limited run — Zach Lezberg, Quantum NY, LLC, Brian Blattman, Colours Productions and Sanctuary Productions — revealed the news of the work. Centering on an obscure and tortured German-American transsexual rock singer, Hedwig — presented in a concert form — told her story backed by the band The Angry Inch. The original Off-Broadway run played Feb. 14, 1998-April 9, 2000 at the Jane Street Theatre. Mitchell starred (with Miriam Shor as Yitzak) and penned the book to Trask's score. The stage work was later adapted for the 2001 film.
Among the names who went on to fill Hedwig's shoes Off-Broadway were Kevin Cahoon, Michael Cerveris, Matt McGrath and Ally Sheedy. The work also earned OBIE Awards for creators Mitchell and Trask as well as the 1998 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical.
Casting for the new Off-Broadway run will begin at the Entertainment Industry Expo (EIE) on June 3rd at the Westin Hotel in Times Square. The call, which will be held 10 AM-6 PM, welcomes Equity and non-union performers. Free registration and more information can be obtained at EIENYC.com.
