It's been two years since Hedwig packed up her wigs and moved Off-Broadway. A movie version followed alongside countless regional productions and international debuts in London and Edinburgh. Until Nov. 13, however, Hedwig and the Angry Inch never played San Francisco. The popular drag rock musical, starring Kevin Cahoon, opens Nov. 20 at the Victoria Theatre.
Hedwig grows up as a confused young boy in East Germany who, through an American G.I., flees the Iron Curtain — but leaves a little piece of himself back behind the Berlin Wall. Not fully a woman (the sex change operation is botched), Hedwig nurtures the rock 'n' roll talent of another young boy and is betrayed for her efforts. Hedwig takes place after a scandal has granted the failed rock diva a small concert gig, right across the river from a stadium show starring her protege. Songs in the score, performed with a live rock band, include "Tear Me Down," "The Origin of Love," "Wig in a Box," "Sugar Daddy," "Angry Inch," "Wicked Little Town," "The Long Grift" and "Exquisite Corpse."
Tickets are $25-$30. The Victoria Theatre is located at 2961 16th Street between Mission and South Van Ness. For reservations, call (415) 863-7576.
