News Helen Hayes Awards Presented May 7 at Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. The nominees were announced March 19, and two New York aimed titles — The Rhythm Club and Wonder of the World — are among nominees in the new-play category.

The 17th annual awards recognize work in the 2000 calendar year. The awards will be handed out May 7 at the Kennedy Center Opera House, with S. Epatha Merkerson as mistress of ceremonies. It's a black-tie event. For more information, visit http://www.helenhayes.org.

Nominations for The Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play, a major category, include A House in the Country by Peter Coy (Charter Theatre), Blue by Charles Randolph-Wright (Arena Stage), Life in Refusal by Ari Roth (Theater J), The Rhythm Club, book and lyrics by Chad Beguelin music by Matthew Sklar (Signature Theatre), Sing Down the Moon, Appalachian Wonder Tales, conceived by Mary Hall Surface and David Maddox (Theater of the First Amendment), Wonder of the World and by David Lindsay Abaire (Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company). Rhythm Club, about young musicians in Nazi Germany hooked on the liberating quality of swing music, has hopes for a Broadway future and had announced early 2001 as a target date. The commercial production did not materialize following its resident tryout at Signature. The musical was also nommed for a Helen Hayes in the category of Outstanding Resident Musical. Manhattan Theatre Club will produce the New York City premiere of Wonder of the World, with Sarah Jessica Parker, in fall 2001.

Nominees in the category of Outstanding Non-Resident Production include Another American: Asking and Telling (The Studio Theatre), Blast! (The Kennedy Center), Fosse (The National Theatre), It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues (The Kennedy Center), James Joyce's The Dead (The Kennedy Center), Wit (The Kennedy Center).

Nominees for Outstanding Resident Musical are Dinah Was (Arena Stage), Play On! (Arena Stage), The Rhythm Club (Signature Theatre), Side Show (Signature Theatre), Sing Down the Moon, Appalachian Wonder Tales (Theater of the First Amendment), You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown (Round House Theatre).

Outstanding Resident Play nominees are Collected Stories (Theater J as part of the Potomac Theatre Festival 2000: Global Voices), The Country Wife (The Shakespeare Theatre), The Glass Menagerie (Round House Theatre and Everyman Theatre), Heaven (Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company), "MASTER HAROLD...and the boys (The Studio Theatre), Shakespeare's R&J (Folger Theatre).
