Margo Jones' Dallas theatre, established in 1947, was the first modern professional resident theatre in the U.S., and the model for more than one theatre. She was mentor to playwrights such as William Inge, Horton Foote, Jerome Lawrence, and Robert E. Lee, as well as Tennessee Williams, whose The Glass Menagerie she co-directed in its first Broadway production. She also directed Summer and Smoke and produced Inherit the Wind before her early death in 1955.
