Classic Arts News Hilliard Ensemble Begins Seven-City North American Tour The Hilliard Ensemble, the four-man vocal ensemble from Great Britain that has, over nearly three decades, earned a high reputation in early and new music alike, begins a seven-city tour of North America tomorrow with a concert in Vancouver.

Not only will the hard-working quartet visit both coasts and the Midwest, they'll be performing five different programs:

  • "Douce M_moire" - Secular vocal music, ranging from the formal late-medieval chansons of du Fay through Renaissance madrigals to contemporary works by Veljo Tormis and Elizabeth Liddle (Whale Rant) and the exuberant avian onomatopoeias of Janequin's Chant des oiseaulx.

  • Requiem - the beautifully mournful Missa pro Defunctis of Orlando di Lasso, along with motets by Palestrina.

  • "Arkhangelos" - the group's newest program, a smorgasbord of music from various Christian traditions: sharakans from Armenia and laude from medieval Italy, along with modern works from the Roman Catholic (James MacMillan), Greek Orthodox (Ivan Moody), Russian Orthodox (Alexander Raskatov and Arvo P‹rt), and Anglican mystical (Jonathan Wilde) traditions.

  • "Se la face ay pale" - the Mass setting of that title by Guillaume du Fay, along with motets by Josquin Desprez and chant from 12th-century Aquitaine.

  • "Fortuna Desperata" - madrigals and songs from Renaissance Italy, France and England.
