These productions are all part of new artistic director Paul Miller's opening season at the helm. In a press statement, he commented of the success of Pomona, “I'm thrilled that Ali's play will be seen by many more people on the South Bank and in Manchester, in Ned Bennett’s quite brilliant production. New work is the life-blood of any theatre, and over 4800 people saw this audacious and original piece of theatre in Richmond.
"We will carry on mounting adventurous new work despite the loss of regular ACE funding this year, which is why we’re proud to be producing Adam Barnard’s innovative new play buckets in May, and working with Sheffield Theatres to bring back Deborah Bruce's glorious The Distance to the OT, after a run at the Crucible Studio, this Autumn. These are challenging times for the Orange Tree but I have no doubt about one thing: the real risk lies in taking no risks."
Buckets will begin performances May 28 prior to an official opening June 1, for a run through June 27. Rania Jumaily will direct a play that is described as a play about bucket lists, life planning and the disappointing fact that you're not going to live forever and that time is always running out.
Pomona, which premiered at the Orange Tree in 2014, will return for a run at the National's Temporary Theatre from mid-September to mid-October, then at Manchester's Royal Exchange Oct. 29-Nov. 21. Ned Bennett directs what is described as a sinister and surreal thriller.
The Distance will be revived at Sheffield's Crucible Studio, beginning performances Oct. 30 prior to an official opening Nov. 3, for a run through Nov. 14, then transfer to the Orange Tree, beginning performances Nov. 26 prior to an official opening Nov. 30, for a run through Dec. 19. Charlotte Gwinner directs a play that is described as a play about motherhood (and fatherhood), about keeping control and letting go.
Casting for each production is to be announced.
