Somerset Maugham's Home and Beauty is to close earlier than planned, on Jan. 11, 2003.
A light-hearted comedy set in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, Home and Beauty, which stars Jamie Theakston and Victoria Hamilton and is directed by Christopher Luscombe, is a three-act play in which a soldier, missing and presumed dead, returns unexpectedly from a POW camp only to find that his wife, believing herself to be a widow, married his best friend.
The resulting love triangle eventually splits, but in an unexpected direction.
This is the second Maugham play to have appeared on Shaftesbury Avenue (and in the same theatre, the Lyric) this year after The Constant Wife, another comedy set around a marriage, but one with a rather harder-hitting message about the relationship between the sexes.
