The first round of the triennial Honens International Piano Competition will take place at Symphony Space in Manhattan this week. It is free and open to the public.

Competitors will give 40-minute recitals on the morning of March 28; the morning, afternoon, and evening of March 30; and the morning, afternoon, and evening of March 31.

Preliminary rounds for the competition will also be held in Calgary and Hamburg. Performances in all three cities will be recorded on digital video; a jury will view the videos in June in Banff, Alberta, Canada, and select 21 quarterfinalists.

The quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will be held in Calgary in October and November. A total of $84,000 in prizes, as well as performance opportunities and career support, will be awarded to the winners.

Previous winners include Maxim Philippov, Albert Tiu, Sergei Babayan, and Kyzysztof Jablonski.
