The Birthday Concert, staged by Lonny Price last spring in honor of the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer-lyricist's 80th birthday, features a host of Broadway stars and original cast members from Sondheim's musicals. Among the performers are Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters, Mandy Patinkin, Joanna Gleason, Chip Zien, Audra McDonald and George Hearn, backed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The original Broadway production of Into the Woods, filmed for PBS' "American Playhouse" in 1990, stars Peters, Gleason, Zien, Danielle Ferland, Robert Westenberg, Kim Crosby and the late Tom Aldredge.
The 1966 teleplay "Evening Primrose" starred Anthong Perkins, Dorothy Stickney, Larry Gates and Charmian Carr. Paul Bogart staged the dark 50-minute tale of a poet who hides away in a department store only to discover he is in lovely young company. Songs include "Take Me To the World" and "I Remember."
The Tony Award-winning 2006 Broadway revival of Company, staged in an actor-musician production by John Doyle, stars Raul Esparza as 35-year-old bachelor Bobby. It was originally filmed for PBS' "Great Performances" and aired in 2008.
