News   Hurricane Katrina Play Uncle Wiggily to Run at Theatre for the New City

A verse play with music about Hurricane Katrina, The Further Adventures of Uncle Wiggily: Windblown Visitors, will be presented March 1-25 at Theater for the New City.

Laurel Hessing has written the work, aimed at young audiences, in which "a child uprooted from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, separated from her grandfather during her rescue and whisked off to distant relatives in New York, finds herself in a strange new world," according to press notes. Arthur Abrams has written the score.

Hessing's work is inspired by the Uncle Wiggily stories of Howard R. Garis (1873-1962) and features the Uncle Wiggily character.

The production — which includes masks, puppetry and aerial choreography — is directed and choreographed by Crystal Field.

The cast of 35 includes ten children. Starring are Clara Ruf Maldonado, Christopher Grant, Craig Meade, Primy Rivera, Elizabeth Ruf, Michael Vazquez and Taylor Boradavka.

The production has set design by Donald L. Brooks; costume design by Myrna Duarte; masks by Candice Burridge; puppet design by Morgan Esbert, Spica Wobbe and Momo Felix; lighting design by Jason Sturm; sound design by Joy Lindscheidt and David Nolan; and aerial dance by Lisa Gioggi. Theater for the New City is located at 155 First Avenue at Tenth Street in Manhattan. For tickets call (212) 254-1109 or visit www.theaterforthenewcity.net.
