Pint-sized theatre critic Iain Armitage has been tapped to lead a potential spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. According to The Wrap, the eight-year-old actor and web personality would play a young Sheldon Cooper—the socially inept physicist portrayed by Emmy winner Jim Parsons in the long-running CBS comedy.
Armitage can currently be seen on screen in the HBO series Big Little Lies. He comes from a theatre pedigree: His father is Tony nominee Euan Morton (currently headlining the Hedwig and the Angry Inch national tour), and his mother is producer Lee Armitage.
The new series, which has yet to pick up an official pilot order from the network, is tentatively titled Sheldon and would follow Sheldon growing up in Texas. Broadway alum Zoe Perry (The Other Place) is in negotiations to play Sheldon’s mother Mary—a role played in the original series by her own mother, Tony nominee Laurie Metcalf.
