The West Coast premiere of Icarus and Aria at L.A.'s Sacred Fools Theatre on July 6 will reunite writer Kirk Wood Bromley with director Alexander Yannis Stephano and producer Allen Lulu, who were responsible last year for Want's Unwished Work or, A Birthday Party, a romantic comedy in iambic pentameter with a cast of 18. The show was the biggest box office success in Sacred Fools' history.

Icarus and Aria is, like Want's Unfinished Work and other Bromley plays, a verse drama. It was inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Icarus is a Latino sports hero, the new star quarterback for the Arizona Aztecs. Aria is the favored daughter of the Anglo owner of the team. Icarus and Aria seek only wedded bliss. It's them against the world.

The play has a large cast of characters who complicate the lives of the two lovers. These include Primalo, Icarus' half-brother and the leader of El Imaginero, a dangerous street gang. There is also Jimmy, Aria's half-sibling who is an underling of his father's. Each faction has a crew of supporters and functionaries, and complex, extended families.

There are also two gangs of capitalists, facing off along racial lines. And since this involves sports, can the media be far behind? The 23-person cast includes Glenn A. Barack, Pam Bel Anu, Bryan Bellomo, Robert Patrick Brink and Gina Marie Fields, among many others. M.E. Dunn has designed the costumes; she won an Ovation Award in 1998 for Great Men of Science at Circle X. Set and lighting design are by Burris Jackes.

Icarus and Aria was first performed in New York by Inverse Theatre as part of the First International New York Fringe Festival.

Sacred Fools Theatre is located at 660 N. Heliotrope Dr. For tickets and information call (310) 281- 8337.
