Idina Menzel on Why It's a Relief to Do a Straight Play | Playbill

Off-Broadway News Idina Menzel on Why It's a Relief to Do a Straight Play The Tony winner discusses her current gig: starring in Joshua Harmon’s Skintight Off-Broadway.

Idina Menzel stopped by Live With Kelly & Ryan July 3, gearing up for another week of performances in Roundabout Theatre Company’s Skintight Off-Broadway.

The Wicked Tony winner and the voice of Elsa in the Disney feature Frozen told hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest that working in a straight play—where she doesn’t have to worry about her singing voice—is a relief. “To not be like 'ooooooh hmmmmmm' [warming up] and wondering, 'Is my voice there?'“ each morning is a weight off Menzel’s shoulders.

Menzel plays Jody in the play by Joshua Harmon. “This is a play about a woman my age whose husband left her for an extremely young woman who is a Soul Cycle instructor and she goes home to her fashion mogul father to try to find some peace and solace only to find he is now living with his young boyfriend who is 20 years old,” she explained. The play resonates personally for Menzel: “I am confronted with getting older and how that feels.”
