Directed by Jonathan Kent, it stars Imelda Staunton as Madame Rose. Further casting for the West End is still to be confirmed, but at Chichester the company also featured Lara Pulver as Louise and Kevin Whateley as Herbie. Also in featured roles were Gemma Sutton as June, Dan Burton as Tulsa, Anita Louise Combe as Tessie, Louise Gold as Mazeppa and Julie Legrand as Electra/Miss Cratchitt.

This transfer marks the first time the show has been seen in London for 40 years, since Angela Lansbury starred in the show's first West End production in 1973 at the Piccadilly Theatre, before subsequently reprising it on Broadway.

Gypsy reunites Staunton and Kent, who previously collaborated on the Chichester Festival Theatre production of Sweeney Todd, which, after a sell-out run there, transferred to the West End's Adelphi Theatre. They also worked together in Good People at Hampstead Theatre, subsequently transferring to the West End's Noel Coward.

Staunton's extensive other theatre credits include Guys and Dolls, A Chorus of Disapproval and Life x 3 (all for the National Theatre), A Delicate Balance and There Came a Gypsy Riding (Almeida Theatre) and They Shoot Horses Don’t They? and The Wizard of Oz (both for the Royal Shakespeare Company). West End credits include Uncle Vanya, Into the Woods, Calico and Entertaining Mr. Sloane; other London credits include Habeas Corpus (Donmar Warehouse) and Circle Mirror Transformation (for the Royal Court). Film credits include an Oscar-nominated performance in the title role of Mike Leigh's "Vera Drake" and starring appearances in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," "Shakespeare in Love," "Peter's Friends" and most recently "Pride."
