News In Honor of Steelers, Pittsburgh Public Cancels Earnest Performance Super Bowl Sunday The 7 PM Feb. 5 performance of The Importance of Being Earnest — the Oscar Wilde comedy about good manners, cucumber sandwiches, starched collars, tea and handbags — will be cancelled at Pittsburgh Public Theater owing to sweat, bruises, tackling, violence and Gatorade.

Pittsburgh Public Theater will join with the rest of the city to celebrate the AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers playing in the Super Bowl.

According to Pittsburgh Public, "To honor our hometown heroes as they head to Super Bowl XL, we have cancelled the Sunday Feb. 5, 7 PM performance of The Importance of Being Earnest so our audience, cast and crew can join with the rest of the city in celebrating this momentous occasion."

Sunday's 2 PM matinee of Earnest, directed by Public artistic and executive director Ted Pappas, will go on as scheduled, but the post-show talkback has been cancelled.

Ticket holders for the 7 PM performance should call the Public's box office at (412) 316-1600 for exchange options.

* Pittsburgh Public had a hit with several engagements of The Chief, the solo play about Art Rooney, the beloved founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was commissioned by Pittsburgh Public and penned by Rob Zellers (Public's director of education) and Gene Collier (a sports writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).
