Warner Bros. has set a release date for the highly anticipated film adaptation of In the Heights. The project from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes is slated to premiere June 26, 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The date announcement follows a $50 million deal for the feature film adaptation, which was previously in development at The Weinstein Company. Rights reverted back Miranda and Hudes earlier this year.
Hudes adapted her Tony-nominated book for the film, which will be directed by Jon M. Chu. Miranda is producing.
Last fall, Hudes was the first to call for The Weinstein Company to hand over rights to the film in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal that cracked open decades of institutionalized sexism and sexual predation plaguing the entertainment industry.
Following Miranda’s success with Hamilton and his popularity on television and film, several major studios were eager to put In the Heights into production, and made lucrative offers when rights to the film were auctioned off in early May. Among the studios who bid on the project were Fox, Paramount, Sony, Disney, Netflix, and Apple.
