Video Inside the Groundhog Day Rehearsal Room What will the beloved film be like as a musical?

Groundhog Day not only marked six more weeks of winter, according to Punxsutawney Phil, it also marked six weeks until Groundhog Day the musical bows on Broadway. After an acclaimed run in London, the show with book by original screenwriter Danny Rubin and the team who brought us Matilda The Musical (Tony-winning director Matthew Warchus, Tony-nominated composer/lyricist Tim Minchin, Tony-winning choreographer Peter Darling), begins previews at the August Wilson Theatre March 16 and opens April 17.

Playbill visited the rehearsal room where two-time Tony nominee Andy Karl (Rocky, On The Twentieth Century) stepped into the shoes of Phil Connors, played in the movie by Bill Murray, and led the cast in four songs from the show. From “Small Town USA” to “If I Had My Time Again,” from “One Day” to “Seeing You,” Groundhog Day simultaneously taps into the comedy of musical comedy, while reaching new depths in a story about how you want to live each day. In the video above, Warchus describes what he loves about the show—plus some visual effects to be excied about. And don’t worry, movie fans: Rubin and team have kept you in mind and render a musical for Groundhog Day fans new and old.
