Principal photography has just begun on the remake of the 1992 animated feature that co-stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Will Smith as the Genie.

Tony nominee Billy Magnussen, who starred as Cinderella’s Prince in the film adaptation of Into the Woods, has joined the cast of Disney’s new live-action version of Aladdin. Magnussen’s role is one of two new characters that have been added to the remake. He’ll portray Prince Anders, a potential suitor for Princess Jasmine.

Tony nominee Billy Magnussen, who starred as Cinderella’s Prince in the film adaptation of Into the Woods, has joined the cast of Disney’s new live-action version of Aladdin. Magnussen’s role is one of two new characters that have been added to the remake. He’ll portray Prince Anders, a potential suitor for Princess Jasmine.

Also added for the remake is the character of Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s handmaiden and confidante, who will be played by SNL alum Nasim Pedrad.

Completing the cast are Navid Negahban as the Sultan, and Numan Acar as Hakim, Jafar’s right-hand man.

Big Fish screenwriter John August wrote the new screenplay for Aladdin, which incorporates original songs from the film by Oscar winners Alan Menken, Tim Rice, and the late Howard Ashman, as well as two new songs by Menken and Tony- and Academy Award-winning Dear Evan Hansen and La La Land songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Guy Ritchie directs the film, which is currently filming at Longcross Studios outside London.
