As part of its Sondheim Celebration, which will include mountings of six Stephen Sondheim musicals, the Kennedy Center presents Into the Woods, Jr. from May 3 to May 12. With a running time of one hour, the musical features excerpts from the award-winning Sondheim-James Lapine musical, which is currently enjoying a Broadway revival at the Broadhurst Theatre. The Kennedy Center production features a cast of young performers from the Washington area who have participated in a year-long program in D.C. partnership schools, and the musical is geared for children (ages five and up) and their families.

Into the Woods Jr. is part of the Broadway Junior Collection at Music Theatre International, a company that provides schools with abridged editions of Broadway musicals. Based on the Grimm fairytales, the musical interweaves the tales of such classic characters as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of beanstalk fame), Rapunzel and many others.
