The title is a seldom-staged one from the oeuvre of the 18-century German playwright; when Schiller is seen in America, the selection is typically either Don Carlos or Mary Stuart. Love and Intrigue was written in 1783, and is an attack on the social class system of the time. Nobleman Ferdinand von Walter and commoner Louisa Miller fall in love, but Ferdinand's father, the President, refuses the match in favor of Lady Milford, mistress to the Duke, who has eyes for Ferdinand. Meanwhile, Wurm, a court secretary, has designs on Louisa. Verdi used the play as the basis of his opera Luisa Miller.
