Irving Berlin Extravaganza Holiday Inn Will Open on Broadway in 2016

News   Irving Berlin Extravaganza Holiday Inn Will Open on Broadway in 2016

A stage adaptation of the Irving Berlin classic film musical "Holiday Inn" — about a hotel that comes alive on each holiday — is headed for Broadway in fall 2016.

In August, Playbill.com exclusively reported that NBC Universal execs Chris Herzberger, Jimmy Horowitz and Bob Greenblatt were working to bring the production to New York.

Billed as Holiday Inn, The New Irving Berlin Musical, the show is being produced by Roundabout Theatre Company in association with Universal Stage Productions. It's scheduled to begin previews Sept. 1, 2016, and open Oct. 13 at Studio 54. Though it is being billed as a limited engagement, no final date was announced.

Based on the 1942 film that starred Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire and first introduced the song "White Christmas," the extravagant stage production premiered in fall 2014 at the Goodspeed Opera House, where it earned strong reviews, resulting in an extended holiday run. The production was remounted this summer at the massive St. Louis Muny.

Gordon Greenberg (Guys and Dolls, Jacques Brel...), who wrote the new book along with Chad Hodge, directed both productions and will recreate his staging on Broadway.

According to production notes, the show "tells the story of Jim, who leaves the bright lights of show business behind to settle down on his farmhouse in Connecticut. He quickly discovers life isn’t the same without a bit of song and dance. Jim’s luck takes a spectacular turn when he meets Linda, a spirited schoolteacher with talent to spare. Together they turn the farmhouse into a fabulous inn with dazzling performances to celebrate each holiday, from Thanksgiving to the Fourth of July. But when Jim’s best friend Ted tries to lure Linda away to be his new dance partner in Hollywood, will Jim be able to salvage his latest chance at love?" The score, which has been augmented with other hits from the Berlin songbook, includes "Steppin' Out With My Baby," "Shaking the Blues Away," "Cheek to Cheek," "Easter Parade," "Puttin' On the Ritz," "Heatwave," "Blue Skies" and "Happy Holidays." The family-friendly stage production is packed with show-stopping dance numbers choreographed by Denis Jones (Honeymoon in Vegas).

Casting and additional creative team members will be announced at a later date.

Universal Stage Productions, in an arrangement with The Irving Berlin Music Company, has been shepherding the project, and is listed as co-producer.
