The show has book and lyrics by Leslie Becker and music by Michael Hunsaker. Directed by Jack Cummings III, Fetching Water is based on a concept by Hunsaker about "what happens when what we think of as perfection goes in a direction we're not expecting, and the consequences of discovering the difference between 'more' and 'different,'" the composer said.
The moralistic book musical has the flavor of The Fantasticks meeting Into the Woods, Hunsaker said.
A public reading will be held 3 PM Dec. 15 at The Theatre at St. Peter's (York Theatre). The cast will be Chad Kimball (Jack), Rachel Hardin (Jill), Edward Staudemayer (Dick) and Stephanie Kurtzuba (Jane).
Transport Group will present an Off-Broadway staging in March 2004 at the Connelly Theatre in the East Village. Greg Schaffert is attached as producer of the show's potential commercial future. Becker and Hunsaker are multi-taskers: She's currently appearing as a swing in Broadway's Nine and he's singing in the revue, Listen to My Heart: The Songs of David Friedman.
The writers met through the Musical Writers Playground. He saw one of her pieces in the MWP showcase and invited her onto the project. They clicked, he said.
As lyricist-composer-librettist, Hunsaker has penned a musical version of Measure for Meaure and an original show, Out of Frame. He has appeared at Paper Mill: The State Theatre of New Jersey in Miss Saigon and Childen of Eden.
Becker, who was the Queen in the New York and touring versions of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella recently, is author of the book, "The Organized Actor: A Workbook and Planner for the Serious Actor," now in its fourth edition.
