News Jackie Mason Produces a $19.99 Musical in New Comedy Laughing Room Only, Nov. 19 Musicals don't come cheap nowadays, but one will if Jackie Mason has his way. The comedian stars in the Broadway comedy Laughing Room Only which opens Nov. 19.

The usually solo comic is joined by a supporting cast and will sing and dance in the new work with music. Previews began at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre Oct. 23.

In Laughing Room Only, Mason plays himself attempting to put on a $10 million Broadway musical for $19.99. The new musical within the show will actually be staged as part of the show through "sexy, hilarious and even nude sketches, songs and production numbers," a release explains.

Laughing Room Only is written by comedian-songwriter Dennis Blair based on a concept by writer Digby Wolfe with music by Doug Katsaros.

Robert Johanson (former artistic director of Paper Mill: The State Theatre of New Jersey) directs a cast that also includes Darrin Baker (Sunset Boulevard, Footloose), Robert Creighton (The Lion King, — Toronto and Los Angeles), Barry Finkel (Side Show, High Society), Ruth Gottschall (The Music Man,... Forum) and Cheryl Stern (The Women, That's Life).

The songlist includes "Million Dollar Musical," "French Chanteuse," "This Jew Can Sing," "Frieda From Fresno," "Only in Manhattan," "Starbucks," "Comedy Ambulance," "Jackie’s Signature Song," "I Need a Man," "Perfect," "Jew Gentile Tap-Off," "Tea Time," "Musical Chairs," and "Finale." Michael Lichtefeld handles choreography and Joseph Baker serves as the musical director. The design team features Michael Anania (set), Thom Heyer (costume), Paul D. Miller (lighting) and Peter Hylenski (sound).

The new Broadway presentation is produced by Jyll Rosenfeld and Jon Stoll and James Scibelli in association with Sidney Kimmel, John Morgan and the Helen Hayes Theatre Company.

Mason has previously performed on Broadway in six of his own one-man shows — The World According to Me, Brand New, Politically Incorrect, Love Thy Neighbor, Much Ado About Everything and Prune Danish. He received a special Tony Award for the first.
