News James Franco and Patti Smith Will Open "Rockaway!" Arts Festival at Fort Tilden June 29 "Rockaway!," a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, and in collaboration with MoMA PS1, will open June 29 with a poetry reading from James Franco (Of Mice and Men) and spoken word performance from acclaimed artist, writer and musician Patti Smith.

Smith, along with MoMA PS1 Director Klaus Biesenbach, worked together on conceiving the project which will run through Sept. 1 at Fort Tilden (169 State Road). The team at MoMa PS1 was invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) and the JBRPC to conceive the festival which is hosted by the National Parks Service.

"Rockaway!" will showcase the nature and history of Fort Tilden and will feature solo projects by Smith, Adrián Villar Rojas and Janet Cardiff as well as an international group show. 

The opening day schedule features the exhibition opening at noon, and 7 PM performances from Smith and Franco, followed by an 8 PM after party at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. 

Admission is free and open from 12-6 PM Thursday through Sunday until Sept. 1.
