News Jane Asher to Star in Earnest and Harley Granville Barker Play at U.K.'s Rose Theatre, Kingston Jane Asher - stage, TV and film actress as well as a famous cake maker - will play Lady Bracknell in a new production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest at the U.K’s Rose Theatre in Kingston, on the outskirts of south west London.

It will play in repertory with the European premiere of Harley Granville Barker’s Farewell to the Theatre, beginning performances Sept. 22, prior to press performances for both productions Oct. 5, for a run through Oct. 30.

In the second production, Asher will play Dorothy, an actress who is at the height of her powers but decides to stop acting and turn her attention to more serious pursuits. Asher previously starred at the Rose Theatre, Kingston in Peter Hall’s production of Bedroom Farce. In an extensive stage career that has stretched from the National and Royal Court to the West End, she has also appeared on Broadway 40 years ago when Christopher Hampton’s The Philanthropist transferred to New York.

Other cast members include Kirsty Besterman, Bruce Mackinnon and Jenny Rainsford. Full cast to be announced soon. Both productions will be directed by the Rose’s artistic director Stephen Unwin, whose recent productions include As You Like It, Hay Fever, Miss Julie and The Winslow Boy.
