News Jeff Citations Presented in Chicago June 7, Spotlighting Best of Non-Equity Work; Sin, Dr. Sex, Hannah and Martin Nommed The best of the non-Equity Chicago season will be celebrated June 7 with the presentation of the Joseph Jefferson Citations Awards.

In May, the Citations Wing of the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee announced 97 nominations in 22 categories for the 31st annual Citations season, representing 2003-04 non-Equity productions in Chicago.

Bailiwick Repertory leads Chicago's companies in nominations, with a total of 17, followed by TimeLine Theatre Company with 15 and Circle Theatre and Griffin Theatre Company with nine nominations each.

Outstanding Production-Play nominations are shared by Pegasus Players' production of Broadway Bound; Strawdog Theatre Company's Detective Story; Hannah and Martin and The Lion in Winter from TimeLine Theatre; Circle Theatre's In the Blood, and Eclipse Theatre Company's Lost in Yonkers.

Dr. Sex and Pinafore!, presented by Bailiwick Repertory, and A Kurt Weill Review: Songs of Darkness and Light, from Theo Ubique Theatre Company in association with Michael James, shared nominations in the outstanding Production-Musical or Revue category. (Dr. Sex is New York-bound in a new staging, and was also nommed in the New Work category of the Citations.)

Michael Murphy's Sin: A Cardinal Deposed, the nationally-known new Bailiwick play about the Catholic church sex scandal, was nommed in the New Adaptation and Best Principal Actor-Play categories. It's based on court records and public news about the Boston diocese leadership. Sin will get a separate Off-Broadway run in 2004-05. *

The Citations Awards will be held at Park West, 322 West Armitage Avenue in Chicago, at 7:30 PM. Actor-director David Cromer and Famous Door artistic director Marc Grapey, who shared a Jeff Award last season for their co direction of Famous Door Theatre's The Cider House Rules, will serve as co-masters of ceremonies.

The Citations Wing of the Jeff Committee "was created to recognize outstanding achievement in professional productions of Chicago area theatres not operating under union contracts." The Joseph Jefferson Awards celebrate Equity work in a separate process and ceremony, every fall.

During the 2003-2004 Citations season (April 1, 2003- March 31, 2004) the Jeff Committee judged 96 productions from 44 producing organizations. The committee recommended 30 productions from 19 producing organizations, and the final list of Citations nominations represents 29 productions from 19 companies. The awards are non-competitive, and multiple recipients may receive awards in each category.
