News   Jennifer Holliday to Guest Star in The Color Purple Mini-Tour Tony Award-winning Dreamgirls star Jennifer Holliday will star as Sophia in a mini-tour of the Broadway musical adaptation of The Color Purple.

The three-city tour launches Oct. 23 in Detroit, MI, where it continues through Oct. 26. Additional cities include Chicago, IL (Nov. 15-16) and Dallas, TX (Nov. 22-23). Holliday made the announcement via her official Facebook page.

The Color Purple has a score by pop writers Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray and a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Marsha Norman.

The Color Purple was nominated for 11 2006 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, when it premiered on Broadway in November 2005.

Songs in the production include "Huckleberry Pie/Mysterious Ways," "Somebody Gonna Love You, "Our Prayer/I Really Want That Girl," "That Fine Mister," "Big Dog/Our Prayer (Reprise)," "Bring My Nettie Back," "Lily of the Field," "Dear God – Sofia," "A Tree Named Sofia," Hell No!," "Brown Betty," "Shug Avery Comin’ to Town," "Too Beautiful for Words," "Push Da Button," "Uh-Oh!," "What About Love?," "Africa," "The Color Purple," "A Church Ladies’ Easter," "With These Hands," "Miss Celie's Pants," "Is There Anything I Can Do for You?," "What About Love? (Reprise)," "I'm Here," "A Church Ladies' Fourth of July," "The Color Purple (Reprise)."

A native of Houston, Holliday made her professional New York theatre debut in 1980 in the revival of Your Arms Too Short to Box With God. That role led to her Tony-winning performance in Dreamgirls, and her rendition of that show's "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" earned the singer-actress her first Grammy Award. She has also appeared on Broadway in the revivals of Grease! and Chicago, and her television credits include "Ellen," "Touched By an Angel" and a recurring role on "Ally McBeal." Holliday earned another Grammy Award for her recording of Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday."
