Jennifer Hudson, who made her Broadway debut in the Tony-winning revival of The Color Purple, is set to star in a biopic centered on the life and career of Aretha Franklin.

The news was announced during Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala, where, according to Deadline, Davis revealed that Franklin herself had chosen Hudson to take on the role. Upon taking the stage at the event, Hudson performed Franklin’s “Think” and “Respect.”

Scott Bernstein and Harvey Mason Jr. are attached as producers. Mason Jr. also served as a music producer on the film adaptation of Dreamgirls, for which Hudson won an Oscar. She also brought a Broadway musical to the screen as part of NBC's Hairspray Live!.

While Franklin herself has never appeared on Broadway, she was portrayed on stage in 2013’s A Night With Janis Joplin, with her “Spirit in the Dark” concluding the first act.
