News Jerry Springer Team’s New Show May Be a German Opera About London Comedy Tantalizing details about Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee’s follow-up to their multi award-winning hit Jerry Springer — The Opera are seeping out.

Despite Thomas’ previous suggestions that he was working on a song cycle about urban life, Lee has revealed that their next show will not only be quite different, but it will premiere in Germany.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph newspaper, Lee (who is currently playing his one-man comedy show at London’s Soho Theatre) disclosed the title of the new piece: The Ha-Ha Hole. About a night out at a London comedy club, the show will make its debut at the Hanover Schauspielhaus in late January 2005. It will be performed by opera and cabaret singers in German.

The Germans involved in the show, says Lee, had no idea what stand-up comedy in London was like until he took them to a gig. “They had this idea that people come on and do their little character monologue and everyone goes, ‘How marvelous,’” he told the newspaper. “I said, ‘No, it’s like fighting.’”

The whole concept, adds Lee, he finds hilarious. “It’s fantastic to have ended up going to Germany to help out on an opera about stand-up comedy in German with a load of Germans; that’s something I’d never have imagined happening in my life. It’s completely ludicrous.”
