A representative for the Huntington told Playbill.com that 30 minutes prior to the end of the Jan. 14 matinee, Day (Proof, August: Osage County), who plays Veronica, suffered the injury as part of an intense scene involving cast member Stephen Bogardus (Falsettos, Les Miserables). Bogardus plays her husband Michael in Reza's Tony-winning comedy, where things get out of hand as two sets of parents attempt to solve a playground dispute between their sons.
"At the start of the fight, I ran full-speed at Stephen with open palms to knock him down," Day said in a statement. "When I fell on the couch as choreographed, I think my right hand was balled into a fist, rather than open, and that’s when I heard a crack. When I tried to hit him with my right hand, I realized something was wrong. The injury wasn’t a result of the fight. The fight is choreographed beautifully, and it’s a great fight!”
Day finished the matinee performance, but was taken to Mass General Hospital, where it was determined she had broken a bone in her hand. The Huntington cancelled the Jan. 14 evening performance of God of Carnage.
God of Carnage resumed performances Jan. 15, with revised fight choreography. Daniel Goldstein, who directed the current Broadway revival of Godspell, stages Yasmina Reza's Tony and Olivier Award-winning play that officially opened Jan. 11 for a run through Feb. 6.
The cast also features Tony nominee Brooks Ashmanskas (Promises, Promises; The Ritz; Present Laughter) as Alan with Christy Pusz (Talk Radio, Dinner at Eight) as his wife Annette. Here's how the Huntington bills the play: "When Annette and Alan Raleigh's son hits Michael and Veronica Novak's with a stick in a nasty schoolyard tangle, the two couples meet to discuss the problem. But all attempts at civilized discussion quickly devolve into childlike behavior in this fast, furious, and very funny comedy of bad manners."
God of Carnage opened to raves on Broadway March 22, 2009, where it played to sold-out houses with its original cast. The production closed June 6, 2010, after 452 regular performances and 24 previews. It won the Tony Award for Best Play. A film adaptation by Reza and Roman Polanski received a limited release Dec. 16. It stars Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly.
