"This is for you guys and for Jack Steeb," Mitchell said. Steeb, who was the bass player in the band Cheater with Hedwig collaborator Stephen Trask and partner to Mitchell for six years, passed away ten years ago.
Mitchell also thanked his parents: "Dad, who’s passed on, who taught me how to be a leader and taught me that beauty was a metaphor to help you think that you could be good," he said. "And for my mother, who taught me to be an artist and gave me my best jokes."
Mitchell also thanked Hedwig director Michael Mayer, associate director Johanna McKeon, as well as movement associate Paul McGill and vocal supervisor Liz Caplan.
"[Thank you] for all your help in the archeological dig of getting this performance out of the fossilized bed of my subconscious."
Mitchell’s Broadway credits as a performer include Big River, Six Degrees of Separation and The Secret Garden. He recently returned to the stage to play the title role of Hedwig, the same that saw him nominated for a Golden Globe in the film adaptation.
