The Australian series, an adaptation of the 2008 novel by Christos Tsiolkas, examines what happens when a man slaps a child — unrelated to him — at a suburban barbecue. Each episode is from a different viewpoint of those who attended the barbecue.

"The Slap" will be produced by Universal Television and Matchbox Pictures with Baitz, Tony Ayres, Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Ted Gold as executive producers.

Baitz's Three Hotels was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in 1993 for Outstanding New Play, and his Other Desert Cities was Drama Desk-nominated in 2011 for Outstanding Play. The latter was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play last season.
