Stage and screen actor Jonathan Cake will join the cast of "Desperate Housewives" for a four-episode appearance this season and as a regular next season, according to zap2it.com.

Cake will play a college-educated police detective with strong family values who investigates a case on Wisteria Lane and becomes a love interest for Bree (Marcia Cross).

Cake most recently appeared in A Flea in Her Ear at the Old Vic in London. He has appeared in New York in Restoration, The Philanthropist, Cymbeline, Medea, Almost an Evening and Parlour Song and in London in Baby Doll and Coriolanus, among others. Screen credits include "Six Degrees" and "Empire."

"Desperate Housewives" airs Sundays at 9 PM ET on ABC.
