News Jonathan Groff Takes Back His Throne as George III in Hamilton Tonight Jonathan Groff, who took a pre-arranged, one-month leave from his role as King George III in Broadway's Hamilton to appear in the HBO film "Looking," returns to the Lin-Manuel Miranda smash at the Richard Rodgers Theatre Dec. 1.

During his absence Oct. 27-Nov. 29, the role was played by Andrew Rannells, a Tony nominee for creating the role of Elder Price in the Tony-winning hit The Book of Mormon.

George III is a comic-relief role in Hamilton, appearing from time to time to snark at the troubles of the American "rebels." The role was created Off-Broadway by Brian d'Arcy James.
