News Josh Landay Will Be The Whipping Man at Hartford Stage; Complete Cast Announced Casting has been announced for the Hartford Stage production of Matthew Lopez's Civil War drama The Whipping Man, which will begin performances Feb. 23 under the direction of Hana S. Sharif.

The Whipping Man, which centers on a Jewish Confederate soldier who returns home from the war to face his own African-American slaves – who are also Jewish – has enjoyed a healthy regional life, in addition to an extended run Off-Broadway by the Manhattan Theatre Club last winter.

The three-person cast will include Che Ayende, Leon Addison Brown and Josh Landay. The Whipping Man will officially open Feb. 29 for a run through March 18.

According to Hartford Stage, "In the aftermath of the Civil War, three men are at a crossroads—Caleb DeLeon (Landay), a Jewish Confederate soldier who has returned from battle, and Simon (Brown) and John (Ayende), two former slaves who were raised as Jews in his household. As the men reunite to celebrate Passover, they uncover a tangle of secrets that might cost each his freedom."

The Whipping Man design team includes Andromache Chalfant (scenic design), Linda Cho (costume design), Marcus Doshi (lighting design) and Broken Chord Collective (original music and sound design).

Since its premiere at Luna Stage in Montclair, NJ, The Whipping Man has been produced at The Old Globe in San Diego, CA, and at Barrington Stage. Lopez's other plays include Tio Pepe (Summer Play Festival 2008), Reverberation and Zoey's Perfect Wedding. For tickets and more information, phone (860) 527-5151 or visit hartfordstage.org.
