Josie Lawrence is set to star in a new production of Mother Courage and Her Children at the The Southwark Playhouse this fall. The London theatre will present Tony Kushner’s translation of the Bertolt Brecht war drama with direction by Hannah Chissick.
Performances of Mother Courage and Her Children will begin November 2 for a run scheduled through December 9. Further casting will be announced.
“I first read Mother Courage when I was an 18-year-old drama student and immediately fell in love with the play,” comments Lawrence in a statement. “Now I feel ready to play her. It’s a major tick on my theatrical bucket list.”
Lawrence is tapped to play the title role, a woman who pulls her cart through a land ravaged by war, attempting to make profit from the ruins that surround her.
Lawrence’s West End credits include Anna in The King and I (London Palladium), Bonnie in Acorn Antiques The Musical (Haymarket), and Alarms and Excursions (The Gielgud). She has appeared numerous times in productions at the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The creative team also includes set and costume designer Barney George. Music is by Duke Special arranged by David Randall. Danielle Tarento is producer.
