Classic Arts News Juan Diego Fl‹rez to Sing in Rock Concert in Lima Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Fl‹rez, now world famous for bel canto fireworks, returns to his hometown and his roots as a rocker this weekend. On Saturday, June 2, he will join pop star Gian Marco, his countryman, in a charity concert benefiting Unicef in Lima.
According to LivingInPeru.com, the two will sing a diverse lineup of ballads, pop tunes and rock music. Many of the songs to be performed were composed by the Puerto Rican songwriter Cuco Peê±a, who is scheduled to conduct the orchestra during the concert.

"I started out singing pop music in places like La Estaci‹n de Barranco — much like Gian Marco," the website quotes Florez as saying. "Despite singing a little of everything in those days, I did not have any contact whatsoever with classical music back then. I was practically raised on pop music, so there will not be a problem going back to that style."

Fl‹rez will reportedly return to Peru next April to sing in Verdi's Rigoletto.
