Classic Arts News Juilliard Quartet Violinist Ronald Copes Hospitalized in California Ronald Copes, second violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet, was hospitalized with a "medical emergency" in San Francisco earlier this week, according to a report in the Contra Costa Times.
No further information on the condition of Copes, who joined the group in 1997, was immediately available.

Despite the loss of Copes, the remaining three members of the quartet‹violinist Joel Smirnoff, cellist Joel Krosnick, and violist Samuel Rhodes‹performed at San Francisco's Herbst Theatre on the evening of January 25, replacing some of the works on the program with solo works for oboe, performed by guest artist Heinz Hollinger. Hollinger also joined the three string players to perform the Mozart Quartet for Oboe and Strings as scheduled.
