News Jukebox Tuner Based on R&B-Soul Label Stax Records Aims for Broadway The history of R&B and Soul label Stax Records is aiming to take the stage in a new Broadway jukebox musical that is being developed by Concord Music Group and Grammy Award-winning producer Stuart Benjamin, according to Billboard.

Matthew Benjamin will write the book to the musical that will cover the history of the label that nurtured the careers of Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the MG’s, The Staple Singers, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, David Porter, Steve Cropper, and Rufus and Carla Thomas and more. A spring 2016 Broadway debut is the goal.

Stuart Benjamin is the producer behind such films as "La Bamba," "Against All Odds," "White Nights" and more. He won a Grammy Award for the soundtrack to the Ray Charles biopic "Ray," and also produced the stage productions of Louis & Keely Live at the Sahara and Unchain My Heart…The Ray Charles Musical.

Stax Records originated in Memphis, TN, in the late 1950's. At the height of America's Civil Rights movement, the label featured an integrated staff and artist roster.
