Though the article quotes an Andrews spokesperson saying there have been “no discussions” about the appearance, the story speculates that the pair is being sought to appear in the film. There are no details about what roles they would play. Andrews won the Oscar as Best Actress for her performance in the 1964 Disney classic.
Variety recently reported that Academy Award winner Meryl Streep is in final talks to join Disney’s film sequel. Streep, who starred as The Witch in Disney’s film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical Into the Woods, would reunite with director Rob Marshall and co-star Emily Blunt on the project.
Streep would play Topsy, Mary Poppins’ cousin, who was not seen in the original 1964 film. It is also reported that her part would be a singing role.
Blunt, who played the Baker's Wife in Into the Woods and co-starred with Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, will play Mary Poppins, alongside Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will play Jack, a lamplighter. The film is based on other books in P.L. Travers’ series of books on the adventures of the magical nanny.
Mary Poppins Returns is set to premiere December 25, 2018. Filming will begin later this year in London.
